Magnetics for high-reliability applications

View the High Reliability data sheet

All Coilcraft engineering and production facilities have received ISO/TS 16949 (Automotive) and ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management System) certification for the “Design, manufacture, and distribution of inductive components including SMT and leaded inductors, transformers and assemblies.”

The high reliability components Coilcraft designs and manufactures meet all the same qualifications. These products are subjected to additional testing to ensure their robustness and their ability to perform in critical applications. Tests are performed in accordance with Coilcraft Procedure CP-SA-10001 Magnetics for High Reliability Applications.

This flowchart outlines Coilcraft's procedures for testing devices used in medical applications.

High Reliability Quality Assurance Process
The Coilcraft Quality Assurance Process is characterized by the following criteria:

Requalification testing performed on samples from each manufacturing lot
Lot traceability maintained throughout the manufacturing process and documentation kept on file for a minimum of 20 years
100% rated current burn-in testing
100% electrical screening
100% visual inspection for mechanical properties under 15× magnification minimum

High Reliability Specifications
A sample of ten pieces from each lot is subjected to solderablilty testing. This test consists of the following procedure:

Visual inspection
High temperature storage at 125°C for 72 hours
Steam aging at 93°C for one hour
Immersion in rosin flux for 5 to 10 seconds
Solder dip
Cleaning
Visual inspection

At the completion of the solderability testing, every part of each manufacturing lot is subjected, at minimum, to the following burn-in tests:

Thermal shock 10 cycles from –55°C to +155°C
Rated current burn-in for five minutes
No-load burn-in for 72 hours at 125°C
Visual inspection

Additional tests, as specified by the customer, can also be conducted. Modifications to the basic tests are also accommodated and incorporated into the test procedure.

At the completion of these tests, a sample of each lot is submitted to Quality Assurance to be incorporated into the accumulated lot for requalification testing.
